Heartwood is the dense, inner part of a trees trunk, composed of older, non-living wood. It provides structural support and stability to the tree. Heartwood is typically darker than the outer sapwood and is more resistant to decay. Over time, as a tree grows, the heartwood increases in size as newer layers of wood form around it.
